Kynoch and his team had set their goal early this year to finish atop the AST leaderboard and with only a few races left on the 2008 schedule that goal is now in sight. "The team and sponsors were all committed to a solid finish within the AST" says Kynoch, "When we completed the 2007 racing season we knew we could challenge in 2008". After cutting his teeth for a couple seasons in Edmonton and with the AST, 2008 was looking as the year the Fountain Tire Spruce Grove race team could make a valid run for the championship. "I couldnt have come this far without my sponsors" states Kynoch, "All of them and my crew have been fully supportive this year. Kynoch is sponsored by Fountain Tire Spruce Grove, Bergoid International, NorWest Cooling Systems in Edmonton as well as Eliminator Downhole Tools and CJ’s Powerproducts & Performance Center in Spruce Grove.

The red carpet was rolled out all the way as the Scott Safety Alberta Sprint Tour returned to Speedy Creek raceway in Swift Current for the second running of the Prairie Dirt Classic. Fans were treated to 2 action packed nights of racing as they witnessed a pair of champions make their way to victory lane and a rookie coming into his own. Night one started off with Montana driver Trevor Kirkland setting fast time with a 13.301 in the Better Body Fitness #37 sprinter. Heat race wins would go to #75 Jesse Dakus and #11 Marc Duperron and the Quick Six Dash saw #15 Gord Kynoch taking the checkers. Part way through the main racing was brought to a hault as the #4 of Tim Gee clipped the left front of race leader Trevor Kirkalnd. As Kirkland tried to keep his ride out of harms way the front end finally gave in dragging the car back into the racing groove collecting sportsman driver #31 Colton Akerstrom. Gee, who was running in place of Rocky Borys would hold on to win with #15 Gord Kynoch and #1 Bill Boyce rounding out the top three.

Night 2 would see #75 Jesse Dakus setting fast time as the All-West Autoparts ride set the mark at a 13.161. Heat races would go to #11 Marc Duperron and #1 Bill Boyce, with the Quick Six Dash once again being won by night ones winner #15 Gord Kynoch. Saturdays feature event was wrought with early cautions that would eventually lead to a competition red to allow teams to top up with much needed methanol. The half way point of the race would see AST rookie #44 Kelly Miller having the drive of his young career as he was able to take advantage of leaders Gord Kynoch spinout and control the helm. Try as he may, Miller was not able to hold off hard charging Sean Moran in the #6m and would relinguish the lead as Moran would prove to be to strong. Miller would settle for a second as #11 Marc Duperron would finish third.

AST To Make "Classic" Return To Speedy Creek Raceway

Western Canada’s fastest dirt racing series returns to Swift Current, Saskatchewan for the running of the 2008 Prairie Dirt Classic. Last year the Scott Safety Alberta Sprint Tour thrilled race fans at Speedy Creek Raceway with the fastest laps they have ever seen. The 700 HP winged warriors were a high speed blur sliding through the corners at a tire blistering pace.

“The 2007 Prairie Dirt was an excellent show, the fans and the facility was exceptional” states AST director Rolly Nash, “The AST was honoured to be asked back in 08’ and for a 2-day show to boot was icing on the cake”. “We are hoping for even better numbers then last year as far as fan attendance and race teams” continues Nash, “All the racers that came last season have been talking all season about the great time that was had by all”.

There will be a new champion crowned in 2008, as the inaugural winner Travis Rutz from B.C. has been hired by another team to compete in the U.S. “I really wish we could make it this year but it is just not in the cards” says Rutz, “Last year was an awesome time, the fans in Swift Current are truly second to none”. Planning on returning in 08’ will be the lone wolf of Saskatchewan, Kyle Fedyk of Estevan. “The AST is a very well run program, everyone is on the ball with their position and the show runs smoothly”. Fedyk continues to say “We’ll be back this year for sure...I've got something to prove there”.

AST Shines Against ASCS

Three of the Scott Safety Alberta Sprint Tour's finest took on the best of the northwest in this years Evergreen Sprint Challenge. The 2-day show was held at the famed Grays Harbor Raceway, known as the "Grand ol' house that Fred built" after the legendary race promoter Fred Brownfield. Current AST points leader Jason Solwold, the "Alberta Blur" Jeff Hodgson and the young hot shoe Casey Adams ventured into GHR looking to prove once again the validity of the AST.

Over 30 race teams were ready for battle to fight their way into the championship nights finale and after 2 nights of great racing all 3 AST drivers were locked into the big show. The icing on the cake came as the A-Main line-up was determined and it was an all AST front row. Jeff Hodgson and the #V8 Tomcar Canada, Monster Energy sprinter would start on the pole with the #39c Scott Safety, X-Treme Oilfield machine along side. Adams would have to battle from the B-Main to get into the $5,000 win feature and with a 3rd place finish did just that. Hodgson and Solwold would finish 2nd and 3rd respectively but all three AST drivers will go down as winners in are books.

The AST would like to congratulate all three drivers on a great weekend of racing, click on "Read More" for race results.

Lemley One Quick Learner...

Brock Lemley had never set eyes on Castrol Raceway or even been to Alberta, Canada for that matter but he figured things out in quick fashion. The Bellingham, Washington driver started the evening 8th fastest on the field of 28 cars in his J&J, Shark powered sprinter. Then with a few adjustments by his crew of Kyle Kenoyer and Ryan Kentch on the Jet City Equipment ride, Lemley found himself locked into the feature with a 3rd place finish in the 4th and final heat of the night.
The Skagit Speedway champion would find himself starting 8th in the big show and looking for a belated birthday present, made fast laps through traffic early on. Soon an intense 4 way battle began with the likes of Sean Moran, Joe Ramaker, Jason Solwold and Lemley. Moran the 2005 Gold Cup champion had the field covered on an open track and in historic sprint car finishes, Lemley made his big move on the final corners of the last lap. As Moran approached lapped traffic Lemley saw his only chance was to throw the Hyundai Equipment, Deming Speedway machine underneath the 6m entering corner 3 and hope it would hold.
In the blink of an eye, Lemley found himself leading the way to the checkers as they exited the 4th turn and capturing the 2008 Gold Cup. Brock turned 28 on Thursday and couldnt think of a better gift then this. Moran would have to settle for third as Jason Solwold beat the reeling driver by 1,000th of a second to the stripe. Scott Safety AST drivers Gord Kynoch and Marc Duperron would round out the top 5.

Rain Proves To Much On Night 1

Try, try as they may racing was not in the forecast for night 1 of the NPP/Edson Chrysler Gold Cup. Teams from the NPP Latemodel Stock division and the Scott Safety Alberta Sprint Tour did the best they could to try and keep the track run in but being hit by three different rain showers proved to much to handle. We hope to see all the fans back for Saturday nights show as the action will be all out for a single night shootout to crown the 2008 Gold Cup Champion. 27 Sprint car teams from Washington, Idaho, B.C., Saskacthewan and Alberta will wage war at Castrol Raceway to take the honours as the winner for the 55th year of Gold Cup history. Fans and racers are reminded that all passes will be honoured from Friday.
